EVALUATION TECHNIQUES

This site is not a substitute for a clinical examination of your skin by a GP or dermatologist.

How can you tell a suspect lesion apart from an ordinary mole?
The ABCDE and ugly duckling methods, used in dermatology, help you identify suspect lesions with a naked eye.

DIFFERENTIATON METHODS: ABCDE AND THE UGLY DUCKLING

ABCDE METHOD

MELANOMA

ASYMMETRY

A line in the middle would not create matching halves.

BORDER

Irregular, wavy, jagged border, clearly defined against surrounding skin.

COLOUR

Uneven colour: light brown to black.

DIAMETER

> 6mm.

EVOLUTION

Rapid evolution of size (width), colour or thickness.

THE UGLY DUCKLING METHOD

One person's moles are often similar in appearance. They look very alike with the same shape, colour and thickness.

A new pigmented lesion can be considered suspect if it has a different appearance from the other moles. This is known as the "ugly duckling".
